US will put satellite router into orbit

The US Department of Defense plans to launch a spacecraft equipped with a router for wireless communications into Earth orbit. The design of the device in the framework of the Internet Routing In Space project (IRIS) was entrusted to specialists from Cisco Systems and Intelsat General.

According to Lloyd Wood, a space project manager for Global Defense, Space & Security, a division of Cisco, not only the military will benefit from the successful launch of such a satellite. The device will also be used in civilian needs for redirecting telecommunication traffic between existing satellites. This will reduce the cost of creating additional trunk channels on Earth.

Currently, information is almost double way to transmit data from one terminal to another via satellite. First, the data is sent to the satellite closest to the terminal, which sends a signal to the terrestrial router. That, in turn, again sends the data to the satellite, but on a different frequency. Only then the satellite equipment sends the data to the destination. In the future, a network of similar satellite routers can be used with the same efficiency as the terrestrial counterparts.

The distribution of resources and overall project management over the next three years will be taken over by the satellite operator Intelsat, and Cisco will provide software for the router. After preliminary testing, the satellite can be used for commercial purposes.

IRIS satellite equipment will be able to handle Layer 3 class IP packets with multicast support. The satellite will be operated by the US Department of Defense Information Systems Protection Agency. Commissioning of the device is scheduled for 2009, according to IT World.
