Intel ClassMate PC Netbook Review - Part 1

Intel Classmate PC is a compact gray-blue machine, made in a shockproof case. This is the third generation of specialized student computers: the new CMPC netbooks (Classmate PC), in addition to the usual bundling of netbooks, are equipped with a pen for easy carrying, a video camera, and a swivel display that is sensitive to pen pressure. It is these computers that go to schoolchildren who study under the “1 student: 1 computer” program — inexpensive, durable machines with which you can teach almost any subject in a simple and visual way.

The grungy, scratch-resistant and easy-to-clean plastic eliminates the appearance of the notebook: neat, discreet, thorough, like any school tool.

A convenient handle, with which the computer is easy to carry to school, turns the CMPC into a small briefcase.

Both the pen and the funny blue cap deprive this pretty computer of the impressive seriousness of some office equipment, the CMPC looks more like a convenient toy. However, appearances are deceptive - the CMPC is quite modern under the hood.

On the left is the VGA port for connecting an external monitor, a USB port, a SD card reader closed by a sleeve, and a retractable on / off button (do not accidentally press!) On the right are an Ethernet connector, a second USB port and two audio inputs for connecting headphones and a microphone. Rear - power connector and a hole for installing the lock. There is a recess in the handle with a transparent curtain into which the owner's name can be inserted - it can be seen that the CMPC design was approached very carefully, so this small handy little thing will make it easy to distinguish the computers of different students from each other.

The cover not only rises, but also turns - CMPC easily turns the tablet. On the right side of the netbook in the special slot inserted stylus; It is designed for convenient operation with a CMPC touch screen.

At the top of the cover is a pivoting camera and microphone

Inside there is an Intel Atom 270 processor (1.6GHz) based on the Intel 945GSE chipset . Half a gigabyte of RAM is inserted into one slot of two: you can install additional RAM into a computer. The computer is clearly designed to shake and blows, so that instead of the hard drive is installed overload-resistant 16-gigabyte SSD-drive.

In Max Performance mode, the CPU Free Benchmark 2.2 test fails in 75.17 seconds. For comparison, the new “adult” ASUS EeePC 1005 netbook with a slightly faster processor Intel Intel 280 (1.66 GHz) passes this test in 71.31 seconds; and the closest competitor, the ASUS EeePC T91 transforming tablet, is much slower in 85.24 seconds. In other words, inside the CMPC it is quite an adult machine, easily competing with the most modern models of the usual netbooks.

Battery life is approximately 4 hours, which is enough for most of the student’s school day.

Inside the machine, a rather specific set of programs is installed in the rewritten version of Windows XP: a simple Windows interface using the Intel Quick Launcher Quick Launch and other improvements turns into a lightweight and simplified schoolchildren operating system with large icons and clear settings. The touch screen and the stylus provide both convenient drawing and handwriting. By the way, the computer is equipped with a position sensor, so if you rotate it, you can use the CMPC as a notebook or notebook.

Intel Network Manager makes it easy to set up access over a wireless network, and Intel Power Manager - the mode of operation and power saving of the computer. Graphic editor ArtRage 2, supplied with many tablets - an excellent program for easy drawing.

Distinguishes CMPC and special software for parental / teacher control. In the child's profile, you can specify the level of computer literacy, allow access to certain programs, specify desktop widgets (sticky note paper, games, calculator, clock), allow or prohibit turning on or restarting the computer. Great idea - reward points for tutorials and penalties - for outrages like games.

However, the CMPC video card is an Intel 945GME adapter built into the chipset with 8 megabytes of memory, so some complex games will not work: it is still a school computer.

In a “combat” form, CMPCs are deployed in a small network tied, on the one hand, to a school WiFI, and on the other, to a teacher’s computer, with which the teacher can manage the educational process: giving students tasks, collecting results, allowing or forbidding those or other programs and so on.

The next part is about how CMPC is used in practice.
