The Pentagon is going to place an Internet router in space

The Pentagon is going to launch a satellite carrying an Internet router into orbit in early 2009. For this purpose, a contract was made with Cisco and Intelsat General.

This project has the simple name “Internet Routing in Space” (Internet Routing in Space, IRIS). Its goal is to place an Internet router in space providing the military with access to the Internet. Also, the satellite will be engaged in IP-traffic routing between other satellites to reduce the signal transfer time to ground subscribers through several repeaters.

After three years of use by the military Intelsat satellite (it was for such a period the contract was signed), it can be used for commercial purposes: for routing audio and video data.
