Apple is building a new data center in North Carolina. No one knows why Apple has such power, according to Rich Miller, editor of Data Center Knowledge, this will be one of the largest data centers in the world:

Apple plans to allocate approximately 47,000 square meters of data center in a single building. This would allow Apple to take a leading position in the ranking of the largest data centers in the world.
Let's look at things in perspective: today, the Apple information center in Newark is a little more than 11,500 square meters, while most data centers around the world do not skip the bar of 23,000 square meters. The new data center will be located next to Google Inc. in North Carolina, and will be a whopping 47,000 square meters. This is a lot of compute nodes, and a massive storage space.

The big question here is: Why? Does itunes and the Appstore require such large resources? maybe this is a new product that will require this enormous computing power and storage space? It can not be only that.
There is an opinion: that Apple builds a massive neural network to keep a duplicate of Steve Job’s brain, which can manage the company forever. Just do not tell it to Jim Goldman =)
