Copyright for multiplication in mind

There is a remarkable book by Ben Clemens “Math You Can't Use” that more and more mathematical formulas and basic software algorithms are being transferred to someone’s intellectual property. These include compression algorithms (archivers), video signal processing (codecs), and some methods of Fourier transform, and much more.

Modern legislation makes it almost impossible to legally use even those mathematical algorithms that you learned about from the scientific press. In programming, things are even worse. For example, even here these three lines of code were considered by the patent office as a new invention (this is supposedly non-standard and innovative use of pop-ups) and protected by patent No. 6,389,458 .

')
You may not use these three lines of code without the consent of the inventor and copyright holder - Brian Schuster and Ideaflood, Inc. - until 2018, when the copyright expires.

However, the 75-year-old American entrepreneur Albert Clay went even further, the newspaper The News & Observer writes . This genius is selling ... a patented way to quickly multiply multi-digit numbers in your mind! For example, 33 by 44 is guaranteed to be multiplied in three seconds using the Clay technique.

Albert is willing to share his knowledge with anyone who pays a modest $ 33. Just send money to Albert and he will send the formula with an explanation on six pages by mail.

What is most funny, the business of an entrepreneur is fully consistent with the law. His method is already officially registered (No. TXu001325432 in the US Copyright Office). And if you multiply the numbers in your mind without the permission of Albert Clay, then, apparently, break the law.
