In January 2007, two white-haired, RDBMS specialist,
David J. DeWitt and
Michael Stonebraker published a terrible thing. And they are really white-haired, and really experts, and so, they encroached on the holy, on MapReduce - see
“MapReduce: A major step backwards” In the article, they criticize MapReduce in general and call it a step backwards compared to RDBMS. Of course, in comments, their young heroes were mixed with shit. There were also well-reasoned answers - see
“Databases are hammers; MapReduce is a screwdriver ” And then it seemed to David and Michael a little, they publish an article-answer to all criticism at once, see
“ MapReduce II ” . All these articles are very interesting reading, including comments.
