Yesterday, November 14, the whole world celebrated World Usability Day - the World Usability Day. Judging by my polls that only Moscow knows usability. I also only guessed about the meaning of this word, until I attended a seminar-conference yesterday, “What is usability or how to make the world more comfortable? ”, Dedicated to this holiday. It turned out, usability - the science of designing user-friendly computer interfaces, rooted in ergonomics. Usabilityists not only “juggle” with buttons, but also conduct a comprehensive analysis and testing of the convenience of programs and websites. Representatives of usability companies, institute teachers, and employees of companies with entire departments for improving interfaces spoke at the conference. In Russia, where large ergonomics were previously given attention, usability for some reason is unjustifiably despised and underestimated. Although not everything is so bad, there are whole communities of usabilists, as well as several companies that are engaged in the improvement of interfaces. As one of the speakers said, “Russian companies are already recruiting usability workers, but they don’t know what they should do.” In America, Europe, there is one usability expert for 10-100 programmers, there are huge usability communities. Judging by the speeches, the creation of good interfaces is a pleasure that is available only to large companies. I was pleased that Yandex has an entire interface development department. As the employee of this department said, “everything was fine until there were children and pensioners on the Russian Internet, then we were all given T-shirts with the words“ I am not representative. ”” Also at the conference I saw the whole process of working to improve the use of interfaces from polling future users before becoming a reality and speed tests. Thanks to all the organizers! This should be interested!
