Is it really the case with the display for MacBook Pro?

While choosing between the Sony Z-series and Macbook Pro 13 or 15 inches, I saw a lot of arguments for and against. Is it really all so ... sucks mediocre on MacBook Pro? And why did they leave the matte screen only in 17-inch suitcases? And another question: has the problem of banding been solved on MacBook Pro? Interested in 13 - or 15-inch models.
