Twitter suffered because of the conflict between Russia and Georgia?

As you know, yesterday several major social networks suffered from DDoS.
YouTube, Livejournal , Facebook and Twitter have been attacked.

According to Bill Woodcock, representing Packet Clearing House (a non-profit organization tracking Internet traffic), this attack is one of the manifestations of the crisis in relations between Russia and Georgia, which also extends to cyberspace.
It is not clear which side initiated the attack, but according to Woodcock, one of the sides splashed out another dose of propaganda, and the second decided to block it in this way. Also according to him, he has some evidence that the attack spread from the Abkhaz region.

In an interview with NYT , he said that the attack was not organized like a normal DDoS attack using a botnet, but proceeded according to a similar scenario: Around 6 pm Moscow time on August 5 millions of users around the world received spam emails, containing links to Twitter and other services. Thus, when everyone rushed to click on these links, the servers did not cope with this wave of requests.
And, although YouTube and Livejournal were among the attacked sites, Twitter suffered the most. YouTube representatives generally said that they did not notice anything unusual.
