F-Secure , a network security company, has sent an
appeal to ICANN with a request to provide officially registered banks and other financial institutions with the opportunity to use top-level domains .safe, .sure, or .bank.
Justifying its request, the company reports that in the second half of 2006, the number of “phishing domains”, which, under the guise of banking sites, steal the financial information of visitors, increased by 94%. Using a domain like .safe, which will be accessible only to officially registered organizations, will facilitate the work of security companies: they will be able to more effectively filter network traffic, cut off spam, etc.
By the way, ICANN will not consider this issue: the organization is not obliged to respond to open letters, appeals of individual organizations, press releases, etc. In this case, only the collective appeal from a consortium of banks will help to solve the situation.

If we talk about the “quality of the idea”, one thing confuses: if you place all the websites of financial organizations in the .safe zone, you will get the false impression that all other zones are not safe at all, and this zone is safe. Calling it 100% safe will not be possible - simply because no site is immune from other vulnerabilities: the introduction of a new top-level domain will simply reduce the risk of getting hooked on the phishing hook, but will not patch possible “holes” in the sites.
