Increasingly in the blogosphere comes across the term mashup. What is it?
Mashup is an application that combines content from various sources, a hybrid of web applications. Nowadays, syndication of information channels (exchange of RSS data feeds) is commonly used, and this is mashup. Another example is using a Google Map on your site (http://www.phpclasses.org/browse/group/bycountry/country/by/). However, today there is a place to be “open” among the market leaders. All you need to do is to integrate something within your site and at your service a huge list of tools for free use (A9, Amazon, Alexa, BBC, Bloglines, Blogger, del.icio.us, FeedMap, Flickr, MapPoint, WindowsLiveSearch, VirtualEarth, eBay, YahooTraffic, YahooMaps, YahooGeocode, Yahoo Shopping, Yahoo Images, Yahoo Audio, WeatherBug, NOAA, NASA, hostip, GoogleMaps, GoogleAdWords, Livejornal, Technorati, TypePad, Shopping.com, YouTube, Zillow and others).
Sometimes combinations of applications generate the most unusual implementation. For example, I was literally fascinated by the “user interface” of the search service Ms Dewey (http://www.msdewey.com), based on the Live.com Search API.
The number of projects allowing the user to build their own page using widgets and RSS of various third-party applications is
growing -
www.netvibes.com ,
www.pageflakes.com ,
www.yourminis.com ,
www.protopage.com ,
www.webwag.com . I recently discovered a similar Russian project -
www.pusk.ru , was pleasantly surprised.
')
I tend to consider mashup an integral part of the web of the new generation. There is no not that futuristic Web 2.0 in which the author of this term Tim O'Reilly implies the idea of using collective intelligence, but the one that we have today in the Web, where various services are combined into an application, with the aim of providing the user with the best quality, convenience and efficiency.
