All over the world, the Internet is getting cheaper, and in St. Petersburg it is getting more expensive. The largest local provider
NWT (North-West Telecom) announced an increase in prices from August 1 by 1-11%. For example, at the tariff "Sprint" (anlim 2 Mb / s) the subscription fee will increase from 159 to 175 rubles. per month. On anlima 128 Kb / s - from 99 to 109 rubles.
Despite the insignificance of the increase, the event itself is so strange that it deserves an
article in Vedomosti , which explains the causes of the phenomenon.
The reasons are, in general, quite simple. Due to the banal
dumping, NWT gained 700,000 subscribers. Last year, the operator reduced the connection prices to 1 rub. and distributed modems for free. Now the market has reached saturation and the operator can easily raise tariffs. Subscribers will not go anywhere. The operator’s disconnection procedure is a rather time-consuming process. In addition, one-year contracts are specifically made with people so that they will not be able to switch off just like that without a fine.
')
Naturally, this may be illegal. But they are no stranger: FAS has repeatedly
tested NWT on suspicion of dishonest competition.
NWT representatives call another version of the price increase. Allegedly, the operator ... costs increased. Oleg Popov, Commercial Director of NWT, says that since 2006, ARPU has dropped by more than 50%, while the company needs to purchase equipment and pay for traffic. Over the year, the Internet traffic of NWT subscribers increased 2.6 times.
Of course, another option is possible. It is possible that the leaders of the largest providers came together and said: “Guys, what are we doing? After all, we will remain without pants ”and decided to raise the prices to the normal level. According to independent analysts, over the past year, due to the constant dumping of ARPU in the city, it fell from 460 rubles. up to about 360 rubles.
In the case of price collusion, we will soon see a price increase not only from NWT, but also from other St. Petersburg operators. But this is unlikely, because with the hated NWT other operators are unlikely to ever sit at the same negotiating table.
