Japanese hacker Takashi Toya did not just crack the iconic hybrid, but also demonstrated that his qualifications are higher than those of Toyota engineers. After hacking the car’s “brain” and tire alteration, it reduced fuel consumption by half: from 5 liters per 100 km to 2.46 liters. For Japan, this is very important, because there gasoline costs about a dollar per liter.
In Japan, the hacking of modern “computer cars” has become a real hobby for dozens of fanatics. Takashi Toya says that they and colleagues treat it as a sport and are chasing records. For example, Takashi retooled his car so that he quietly drives one gas station (49 liters) over 1600 km, which is 40% higher than the factory norm.
