Apple has 91% of the expensive computer market

According to NPD Group statistics , Apple Company in June 2009 controlled as much as 91% of the computer market for more than $ 1,000, that is, Apple actually was a monopolist in this market segment. This is a record figure for the company, a month earlier it was 88%. I can not believe it. Just over a year ago, some experts started talking about a monopoly, when Apple’s share rose to 66% . No one would have thought that Apple would completely oust all competitors from the "premium" segment.

Interestingly, usually PC sales statistics are kept by the number of copies sold. If you think so, the total share of Apple in the market is quite small: only 8.7% (Gartner figures for the II quarter of 2009). But after all, Apple hardly sells computers for less than $ 1,000. That is, if you count the market share in terms of sales in dollars, then Apple could claim a much better result. Just no one thinks so.

The average cost of retail computers is $ 701, including a computer on Windows - $ 515, and on a Macintosh - $ 1,400. This almost threefold difference persists for desktops and laptops. The minimum price for a Windows-based computer is $ 199, and Apple products are never cheaper than $ 999 (except for Mac mini).

In connection with the crisis, consumers began to spend much less - and Apple's sales fell sharply from November 2008 to May 2009. After that, Apple held a sharp price cut, which helped to correct the situation. But interestingly, in the segment below $ 1000, they never went down, as almost all competitors did. At Apple, all price reductions were made in the premium segment. Sly politics, do not say anything. Cheap "poppies" will never happen.
