As mentioned on July 9th in the Google Earth Blog, Google will make a major announcement today in honor of the 40th anniversary of the landing of
Apollo 11 on the moon. If you now
(re-) run Google Earth, you can see the moon in 3D! Find the little planet icon at the top in the middle of Google Earth, and you will see the new “Moon” item. New Moon in Google Earth turns a virtual globe into a three-dimensional image of the Moon. The relief of the moon is shown in 3D, and there are layers that tell you information about the moon.
Here is my first screenshot of the new three-dimensional moon in Google Earth - showing the landing site of
Apollo 11:![[landing lunar module]](https://habrastorage.org/getpro/geektimes/post_images/5aa/096/39f/5aa09639f6b73c4a638a5e9fc0ef3a77.jpg)
The first thing you should check out in the new lunar mode of Google Earth is a terrific tour
of Apollo 11, which is found in layers under the item “Moon Gallery → Guided Tours → Apollo 11”. This tour was dictated by Andrew Chaikin
(Andrew Chaiken) and astronaut Buzz Aldrin
, and this is one of the best illustrations of the
Apollo 11 mission that I have seen so far!

The official application will not start until eleven in the morning. I will
tweet about this event at
http://twitter.com/gearthblog . The rest is expected in today's blog posts. And right now, restart Google Earth and look at the moon!
