A small museum of retro laptops in Petersburg

Recently, I am very interested in the topic of old laptops.

The other day I wandered into a laptop store of one company, but not to buy myself a “new friend”, but to see the collection of museum specimens exhibited in the store. In St. Petersburg, I do not know of another place where old laptops are collected (if you know museums in St. Petersburg or Moscow, tell me).

Sellers were not opposed to me taking a few photos, for which many thanks to them.

So, here is a small list of this museum with photos and descriptions.

From the photographs, you will still understand that this is a Microbit shop, well-known in St. Petersburg, so you want to say right away that this post does not carry any advertising character, the store is not praised and is not evaluated in any way. Just a fact - they have such a museum.

Exhibits are exhibited directly in the trading hall in the public domain, in conjunction with selling laptops.

Photos are clickable, the link is a larger photo.

Let's start the tour. The first to introduce IBM ThinkPad 345C 96 years. The design of the laptop immediately makes it clear that this is IBM and ThinkPad. The notebook boasts an Intel 486DX4 75MHz processor, a Western Digital video controller with 1 megabyte memory, a 10.4 "TFT display with a resolution of 640x480 and 4 megabytes of RAM.

The next exhibit, Compaq presario 1065 , has a 12.1 "CSTN display and a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. It was released in January 1997 and is equipped with a 133 MHz Intel Pentium processor, 16 megabytes of RAM. It weighs 3.35 kg, which is not the case too much.

Two years earlier, Compaq introduced the baby Compaq Contura Aero 4/25, weighing only 3.5 kg, to the public. The laptop had an 8 "monochrome display, a 256MX-based 486SX processor with 8 kilobytes of cache. Nickel-magnesium battery, according to the manufacturer, supported the laptop for 2.5-6 hours (obviously, depending on the load). Instead of trackpoint or the usual us touchpad used trackball.

In the next photo, the device , the name of which I somehow did not remember (next time I will write down;))

Innovace Hyperbook HB370

Laptop based on 486DX2 / DX4 CPU (Intel / AMD / Cyrix) with 4 MB of RAM (expands to 40k). Produced with a 10.2 "display resolution of 640x480 (as an option with a resolution of 800x600) and built-in cd-drive.

Of course, Toshiba laptops could not be in this collection. I present to you the Satellite T1960CS (intelligible page, with a description of which, I was not even on the Toshiba website). The only thing that can be argued is the legendary Mitnick laptop . A laptop in a snap-on trackball as a paddle.

About a similar model there is a small review on Habré .

Dell is also represented here in the face of the Dell NL25C , with an Intel 386 SL processor with a frequency of 25 megahertz, an Intel 80387 SL or Cyrix 387SL coprocessor (there were obviously several variations). The notebook boasts a 16-color 9 "display with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, a Cirrus 6410/6340 video chip with 256 kilobytes of memory and a weight of 2.99 kilograms.

Canon NoteJet 486 (BN22) with a built-in printer will seem exotic. It was released in December 1993 and weighs 4 kilograms. Equipped with a Cyrix Cx486SLC processor with a frequency of 25 MHz and 4 megabytes of memory, a 10 "display and, surprisingly, a printer.

More photos of this wonderful device can be viewed, for example, here (from all sides)

Currently, e-books are quite popular, including the Jetbook brand from ECTACO Inc, but not many people know that another company (Jetta) still produces notebooks under the Jetbook brand. The Jetta JetBook 386SX laptop is presented in this collection. One has only to guess that the laptop is equipped with a 386 processor, since even on the official site there is no description.

The ThinkPad's Ibm line is very extensive, with another representative on display in this museum - the Ibm ThinkPad 380XD . It was produced since 1998, and is equipped with an even more powerful (in relation to others) Intel Pentium MMX processor with a frequency of 233 megahertz (there were laptops equipped with 266 megahertz processors), 32 megabytes of RAM, a 12 "display (800x600 pixels) and a Neomagic video adapter MagicGraph128XD with 2 megabytes of memory. Built-in floppy disk drive and CD-rom were an advantage.

On a shelf with Apple products, Macintosh Powerbook 100 takes pride of place - a 1991 baby with a 9 "monochrome display, a 16-megahertz processor and a weight of 2.3 kilograms. It was developed jointly by Apple and Sony. The trackball is a manipulator in this laptop.

The old man of 1987 Toshiba T3200 release showed itself from the best, working side, showing moving images on the display (4 shades of gray) with a resolution of 640 by 400 pixels. In this 8.5 kilogram device settled 12 MHz Intel 80286 processor, 3.5 "hard drive with a capacity of 40 megabytes and a floppy disk drive.

Another interesting exhibit - EPSON Equity LT ( Information from the official website (pdf) ), something similar to the Toshiba T3200, is equipped with a 12.2 "widescreen display measuring 13.6" wide and 3.2 "high with a resolution of 640 by 200 pixels. Frequency processor (NEC V30) on it can be changed using switches from 4.77 to 10 megahertz.

And it weighs only 5.71 kilograms.

And finally, I’ll add that there are still various typewriters that are old and, for example, such devices:

If you know somewhere else museums laptops, please prompt.

Also interesting is the opinion of the habrasoobshchestvo on the issues

- Is it worth it to organize such a museum (not in a store, but exclusively a museum);

- whether it will be interesting;

- in your opinion, is any organization ready to finance such a venture?

upd: an unidentified laptop is identified, this is the Innovace Hyperbook HB370, the article is fixed :)
