The Chinese Ministry of Health has recognized that treating Internet addiction with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is unsafe, reports the China Daily. The leadership of the Chinese Ministry of Health recommended medical institutions to abandon the use of this method.
On July 13, the Chinese Ministry of Health published on its website a report that the efficacy of using ECT for treating Internet addiction in adolescents did not find clinical evidence. One of the active propagandists of this method is the founder of a clinic for the mentally ill, located in Shandong Province, Yang Yongxin. The management of the medical institution was ordered to stop using this technique.
According to Yang Yongxin, electroconvulsive therapy was used at one of the stages of the four-month program to get rid of the painful addiction to the computer. In this hospital, almost three thousand adolescents completed such a program.

When placing the child in the clinic, the parents or guardians signed the consent for the ECT and paid a monthly fee of 6,000 yuan (about $ 878). According to previously published reports of the patients themselves, they received a session of ECT for violation of one of the 86 clinic regulations. Patients of the medical institution were forbidden to eat chocolate, lock themselves in the toilet, take medicine before a meal, sit in the chair of the head physician and talk about anything other than overcoming their addiction.
