Brazilian University will help the project Openmoko

Jon "maddog" Hall, president of Linux International and CTO at Koolu, delighted the Openmoko community with a letter about successful negotiations with the University of São Paulo to support the Open Source-Openmoko smartphones project.

The university is ready to provide the Openmoko project, left at the beginning of this summer by the Open Source-community to the same name, the following:

• Potential support from the Brazilian Ministry of Telecommunications.
• The use of university developments in the field of telecommunications in Openmoko.
• Using the capabilities and experience of the university in the creation of integrated circuits and their trial production (commercially prohibited for the university). Designed under free licenses, the design will be available to commercial companies for mass production.
• Hosting to support mailing lists, Openmoko forums, etc.
• Lead the movement to attract other universities from around the world.
• Help with documents: contracts, certification and more.

Should we consider the letter from Hall as the revival of Openmoko - the question is still very complicated. But the fact that Openmoko will have support from an academic environment that is very suitable for it, at least, suggests that the prospects and potential of these Open Source smartphones are there.
