Hello! One very good person, an avid cyclist and just an excellent designer, asked me to submit a project, in the development of which, he and the development team invested all his soul and almost a year of personal time. Unfortunately now he doesn’t have enough karma to write a post in the section, so all the advantages for the project, courage and strength of will - only him: a
diamond .
Foreword
Somewhere a year ago, the idea to create a cycling information project appeared, which, firstly, will be just interesting for both beginners and professionals; and secondly, it will be quite modern, comfortable and functional to meet all the urgent needs of the participants.
Design
The first thing to come up with is a simple, recognizable symbol of the project. All that is usually associated with people with a bicycle is all sorts of variations on the theme of gears, profiles of rapidly moving racers or chain links (more rarely). The decision to base
a diamond-shaped frame consisting of two triangles. it didn’t come right away, but compared to it, other options are not even worthy of mention
')

For inspiration, a local project mascot was made of studio clay - a rather ambitious, purposeful and promising cyclist on a road bike. The condition of his bike is rather deplorable, but nevertheless it is not easy to drive the marathon "
Paris - Brest - Paris "!
Much attention was paid to the interfaces of templates, illustrations and photographs for text materials. Such official pages as “page not found”, “
about the project ” and “
site map ” were not spared either. It is difficult to find an absolutely blank page on the “Veloram”. Even in empty sections in a delicate and unobtrusive form, users are invited to participate in the content.

Technology
As a platform for the development of such an information and social project, the
DJEM system was chosen, the only system (from commercial ones) that would natively support all the main functions to ensure competent editorial work:
- role cards (docflow);
- flexible publishing system;
- combination of static and dynamic content;
- complex scheme of interrelationships of documents within the system;
- fast integration with third-party developments;
- unlimited set of fields of the document and their relationship with each other;
- structure flexibility and endless possibilities for development.
about the project
Velorama - this is not a social network and not LJ. This is primarily an information resource. Of course, there are blogs, and communities, and internal messages, and friends, and friends. But at the same time, all user activity is supported by a good information base:
- more than 1000 specialized terms and concepts in the
dictionary , illustrated with high-quality schemes and photographs;
- constantly replenishing
library with detailed notes on
historical topics ,
equipment settings , and peculiarities of using bicycles;
- a
catalog consisting of 10,000 bicycles and components with photos and descriptions;
- collected from various resources
user reviews about components and bicycles.

Also, the project implemented a number of custom tools that can be both useful and gaming. For example,
a bicycle designer , where everyone can specify exactly what components his bicycle is assembled on, create a list of planned parts and count the final weight. Thus, the participant of the Veloramy is not only a person, but all his bikes. After assembling the bike, it can be demonstrated to anyone by copying the export code to your website or to your online diary:

In addition, there is a large section of
events , where users can plan as official events, weekend trips and joint attendance at exhibitions, or simply invite friends to their birthday parties. For this, the Yandex card system was integrated, where any participant can tell in detail about the planned and
completed route or venue.
In other words, the essence of “Veloramy” is not just to provide a professional tool for communication, but to build a real knowledge base on the subject of cycling.
Content
From the side of “Veloramy”
- historical materials;
- recommendations and advice;
- technical nuances and features of operation;
- lexicon;
- well-known manufacturers and brands of bicycles;
- coverage of events and competitions;
- news on the topic.
Resource development can be endless - in the future there will be photo and video contests, bike ratings (the easiest, the brightest, the most harmonious, the most bmx), a database of routes and trips with coordinates, tips and tricks, reviews of components and tourist equipment , opening a section for used parts and connecting external trading platforms.
From the side of the participants “Veloramy”
-
reviews on parts and bicycles;
-
travel reports ;
-
event reports ;
- reviews of stores.
We love our like-minded people very much. For users there are plenty of opportunities for self-realization and contribution to the development of the resource. For example, reports from regional events, which we still cannot reach (photos, videos and reports), our own experience (which ointment helps better from Kamchatka bears, that it is better to pour a suspension fork in the winter, what kind of rubber to put on the Sochi downhill). Each interesting material will be supplemented by the efforts of the editorial board, if possible, completed and published in the appropriate section of the library.
Conclusion
“Velorama” is a unique project made with a great love for the bicycle theme and for the development process itself. In which direction the project will develop and what will eventually come to, time will tell. In the meantime, together with you we will try to make it truly interesting and useful.
