Google will build a data center for $ 600 million

Google’s plans to build a giant data center in South Carolina were proudly told by local authorities. A site in the Berkeley County Park near Charleston has already been chosen for construction. The total building area is 210 hectares. The land for construction was purchased by a subsidiary of Google as early as last year for $ 17 million. The purchase of land and preparation for construction were carried out in the strictest secrecy. The subsidiary was registered to nominees, and all the frauds took place in Google’s internal documentation as “Project X” and “Project Y”. The Google Guide now explains that stealth was necessary in order not to show its cards to competitors Microsoft and Yahoo.

Thanks to Google, 200 new jobs will be created in the Charleston area, and the local budget will receive almost $ 2 million a year just from property tax. The local authorities were so grateful that, by way of exception, they abolished the tax on electricity and capital investment for Google.

The main advantages of the selected area in South Carolina are an excess of relatively cheap electricity (tens of megawatts are required for a data center) and a nearby lake (water is needed for cooling).
