Introduced sms verification Google account during registration

From about the beginning of July, some users who wanted to register a new account on Gmail Google began to ask for confirmation of registration from a mobile phone! Proofpik: image
It is worth noting that not everyone needs such confirmation, apparently it depends on the region. Google itself explains this as measures to combat spam and spam.
After entering your number on the mobile phone comes SMS with the authorization code, which you need to enter on the site. What is most interesting is that Google keeps phone numbers in its database for “limiting the number of accounts per mobile number”. The size of this limit is not specified. Actually here you can read the comments of Google itself.
To me personally, this “security add-on” seems superfluous, it removes any user anonymity, and for many it is crucial.
Recently, Google has been very actively adding various sms services, the last was the ability to send a forgotten password via SMS, but they were all voluntary and did not require a mandatory phone number. Anyway, while all this is valid only in the United States and apparently in test mode.
