Once upon a time, when the Internet was thin, slow, and the calculation was not in megabytes, but in minutes, the music was not yet
downloaded from torrents via the Internet, but purchased on CDs and recorded discs to each other with rare Mouzon. In those days, one could only rejoice when buying a blank from Mp3, where at least the tags Artist and Title were correctly scored. Well, if not, it doesn't matter. Personally, I did not use media libraries at that time, preferring to manually throw files into Winamp's playlist ..
Now, at the time of online high-definition video, personal hamster blogs, as well as statistics at Last.fm, correctly completed tags have become a real necessity.
And everything would seem fine, but an inquiring mind will invent a problem from scratch. After all, even properly filled tags do not lead to complete happiness. For example, what to do with performers, if this is a duet? So leave Carlos Santana feat. Everlast in artist tag? Okay, in that case I will find this song, for both performers, but for keeping statistics, it’s still not suitable. And if you use another popular option - Put Your Lights On (feat. Everlast) in the Title tag. In this case, the statistics certainly broken off.
I can think of only three cases where this can be useful:
- duets, trios, etc. - joint performance of several artists.
- tribute - to some extent it will be useful to use it to search not only the artist himself, but also a tribute to his work
- a bunch of composer - performer. For example, classical music is recorded in a huge number of options. Beethoven performed by Solti. Beethoven that throw in the tag Composer? Again it is inconvenient, but the name Solti is also needed (suppose I don’t realize the difference, but there are connoisseurs).
')
All of them are more important not for the media player, but for statistics. But once the filled tags were not needed - the names of the files were enough.
Now tags are used not only to stupidly know what is playing in your player. But also for statistics and creating media libraries. And the further it goes, the stronger will be the need for clear, logical and consistent ways to prescribe tags and read them.
And what is now - no longer fits the realities of time.
So, it turns out that some way is needed to specify several values in some fields. For example, Santana | Everlast tag in Artist or Beethoven | Solti. Where as | You can use any character that is not used in the names of artists and songs.
How do you think, do you need such an improvement in mp3 tags? What would you suggest?
Ps.
And also, I don’t understand why tags are not used in video files. With the current channel thickness and hard drive capacity, video tags will soon become a must.
