Each of the three 3G license holders will spend about $ 2.5 billion on equipment for third-generation networks. At the same time, each operator will spend at least $ 200 million on building a network in Moscow, and if you add St. Petersburg and another ten largest Russian cities with a population of about 1 million people, the cost of infrastructure will be from $ 800 million to $ 1 billion.
Such estimates of analysts confirmed market participants - potential players in the field of 3G. In March, the President of MTS said that over the next five years, the investments of Russian operators in the construction of 3G cellular networks will amount to about $ 7.4 billion.
In particular, at the first stage of network construction in 2007-2008, that is, in Moscow, the leading cellular operators
are planning to invest in the development of 3G about 150-200 million each .
According to the VimpelCom CEO, the company will invest $ 300–350 million in 2007–2008. This amount includes only the costs of purchasing infrastructure equipment and building networks, not including the cost of releasing the necessary radio frequency spectrum in the 2.1 GHz band.
At the same time, analysts are trying to predict which manufacturer will win these giant tenders for the supply of 3G equipment. The main suppliers will obviously be representatives from this list: Siemens, Nokia, Alcatel, Ericsson and Huawei. All these companies have long been working in the Russian market of equipment for communication networks and have approximately the same shares of the Russian market. MTS may announce the supplier for the first stage of the 3G network deployment this week. And VimpelCom intends to do this simultaneously with the announcement of the financial results for 2006, which is expected on April 12.
