Hello, WTO. In Russia, imprisoned for copyright

The Russian Federation Council approved amendments to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, increasing responsibility for violations of copyright and related rights.

The approved norms increase the maximum punishment from 5 to 6 years of imprisonment for crimes provided for by the articles “violation of copyright and related rights” and “illegal use of a trademark”. Thus, these crimes are transferred “from the category of moderate severity to the category of serious ones,” explained the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Legal and Judicial Issues Anatoly Lyskov.

In addition, the law brings in full compliance with the sanctions of these crimes in terms of additional punishment, providing for a fine of up to 500 thousand rubles or in the amount of wages or other income of the convict for a period of up to 3 years, or without it. Currently, this crime is fined from 100 thousand rubles to 300 thousand rubles, or in the amount of the salary or other income of the convicted person for the period from 1 year to 2 years, or arrest for 4 to 6 months, or imprisonment up to 5 years.
