Deputy Prime Minister of Finance Alexei Kudrin said that in 2010 negotiations would begin on the accession of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan to the World Trade Organization (WTO), while he expressed confidence that Belarus would not be a brake on this path. As you may remember, one of the conditions for Belarus’s entry into the WTO was the demonopolization of the telecommunication market, first of all, the elimination of the monopoly position of Beltelecom RUE. A corresponding draft law was even prepared, which was adopted by deputies of the House of Representatives and approved by the Council of the Republic, but was rejected at the last moment by President of the Republic of Belarus A.G. Lukashenko. In view of the new developments, there are serious prerequisites for believing that the de-monopolization of the telecommunication market is quite possible in the near future. Cross your fingers.
