Iris recognition system for mobile phones
On Monday, Oki Electric announced that it had developed an iris recognition system for mobile phones equipped with cameras. Unlike previous recognition technologies that relied on infrared imaging cameras to scan the iris, the new technology uses ordinary mobile phone cameras.
Oki plans to make technology commercially available by 2007. This will significantly improve the security of mobile payment systems.
According to Oki, any mobile phone or pocket computer equipped with a digital camera can recognize the iris after installing special software. The accuracy of identification must be fairly high, with only 1 error per 100,000 recognitions. In addition, the system can distinguish between real eyes and their photos.
