Contextual advertising reached the video streams

California startup YuMe Networks introduced a unique technology for introducing targeted advertising into multimedia streaming content. For example, you can embed advertising in video files that are distributed in P2P networks, or in amateur video that users exchange via the YouTube website. According to the developers, this is the world's first technology of this kind.

In fact, the YuMe video ad is not physically attached to the host file. Instead, a command code is introduced there that launches an advertising broadcast over the Internet. The advertiser can choose where to embed this code: at the beginning or end of the video file. It is possible to broadcast even two commercials in a row. The advertiser also indicates in which videos to place an advertisement: the price depends on the subject of the video (cars, erotica, cinema, etc.), the popularity of a particular file, etc. Geo-targeting is available, that is, the introduction of advertising by the user's IP address, for example, to be shown to residents of a particular city. In some cases, an advertiser may choose a keyword because YuMe software recognizes speech in advertising media. The quality of the videos is performed by specially hired 23 professionals from India.

The YuMe platform then gives the advertiser complete statistics: the number of views, the duration of views, the number of clicks on the advertising link, etc.

Frankly, this technology is very relevant and in demand, because now we are experiencing a real boom of online video . As reported, Eidos Interactive has already announced that it will use YuMe technology in advertising its new game Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary. Namely, advertising fragments will be embedded in selected stories from the gaming channel G4 TV, which will be launched into the peer-to-peer network of the BitTorrent Entertainment Network.

It seems that the new technology is ideal for BitTorrent, especially since this online store threatens to become the largest online merchant of legal videos . Thanks to the introduction of advertising, you can distribute legal content for free, which tens of millions of BitTorrent users will appreciate.

In addition to BitTorrent, the well-known service Metacafe and other video sites participated in the beta-testing of the YuMe technology.

Of course, YuMe Networks is not the only startup that is trying to develop an advertising system for online video. Blinx, ScanScout, Brightcove, PodZinger and others are doing the same thing.
