Wikipedia banned the Church of Scientology

The unprecedentedly lengthy legal process in the Supreme Court of Wikipedia ended again with an unprecedented decision . The court (more precisely, the “Arbitration Committee”, it was named by analogy with Orwell) decided to prohibit access to editing the site from IP addresses belonging to the Church of Scientology and all its affiliated structures. For such a decision the judges voted in the ratio 10: 0 (with one abstention). The verdict takes effect immediately.

IP-addresses of the Church are now equated to open proxies and get on the black list just like a proxy on a permanent basis.

Nothing like this has happened before. Until now, the administrators of Wikipedia only banned individual citizens who were found to be in constant violation of the rules. There were cases when a range of IP addresses was temporarily banned for the same reasons, but never a full block was introduced for a particular organization, especially as influential and authoritative as the Church of Scientology.

The reason for the sanctions was the constant violation by the Church of the rules of Wikipedia, which prohibit anyone to edit articles "to promote their own interests," including in political, philological, ideological, and religious disputes. Wikipedia content should reflect a neutral point of view.
