Now in Barcelona there is
an active discussion of the future release of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. And
it was announced that Ubuntu will run applications for Android.
The launch will use
Android Execution Environment , which will not just be a phone emulator (as in the SDK), but will run each application in its own separate chroot environment. The main difficulties are related to the fact that there is no X in Android, so you need to write a call translator (or just make a wrapper over java-functions). Ubuntu will also support the installation of applications in the android-format APK.
As we already know, Android is ported to full netbooks so that they can be made on ARM processors (which significantly increases battery life), so that in the Android Market there will soon be not only phone-specific applications. Ubuntu, too, to strive for this market (also supporting ARM) and support for android-applications will be very useful.
I'd add that this is a good example of the flexibility of Free Software development (about which
Eric Raymond wrote in his book,
The Council and the Bazaar ). Android, created by Google, is expanding to a completely different platform, and Ubuntu will support programs from a completely different platform.
