OLPC notebook analogues will appear on store shelves throughout the year

As Michael Wang, the president of Quanta Computer , whose plants are currently assembling laptops for the OLPC project, told the Financial Times journalists that the accumulated by them developments will enable the production of a computer analogue for children this or next year. This analogue, having a not much higher price than the OLPC XO ($ 200 versus $ 150), will be freely available to everyone at retail.

Wang manages one of the largest Taiwanese electronics OEMs and believes that he knows when and at what price the market will be ready to accept devices like the OLPC design. According to him, several clients of the company have already expressed their desire to release such gadgets under their own brand. Specific names are not named, but it is known that brands like HP, Dell and Acer are actively working with Quanta.

Let me remind you that Dell has already begun to develop the market for low-cost PCs, releasing a model for China at a price of $ 335. Wang argues that in the near future, this trend will capture many other manufacturers and Quanta's “ultra-low-cost” computer will greatly contribute to this. According to some analysts, due to sales of such PCs in both developing and developed countries, the entire market can grow by 10%.

Wang placed particular emphasis on attention to consumers in rich countries, among whom many from the very start of the OLPC program were willing to buy such a simple but very cheap computer. And it's not just about geeks. There are also a lot of poor people in these countries who will be happy to join modern technologies at an affordable price.
