Istanbul camcorder network recognizes 15,000 faces per second

On the main Istanbul shopping street, Istiklal, which is called the “open-air shopping center,” testing of a unique video surveillance system has begun. It consists of 64 wireless cameras and a computer center capable of recognizing up to 15,000 faces per second in a moving crowd.

The system allows automatic tracking of a specific identified individual. One camera can “lead” it up to 300 meters, after which it “transmits” to another camera installed further down the street. Everything happens in automatic mode - recognition is carried out on the basis of criminal elements.

Currently, the system is being tested, only three cameras were installed on the street. As the Turkish press reports , Scotland Yard uses this system, and it was originally designed to recognize faces inside large buildings, such as train stations and airports.

If the testing is successful, then such networks of video cameras will cover not only Istiklal, but also other busy streets of Istanbul. It is said that the “European Capital of Culture 2010” Istanbul has every chance of becoming a “second London”, which is still the undisputed world leader in the number of video cameras per capita.

At the same time, traveling along the Bosphorus was allowed only for cars with “electronic passes” on the windshield, and all Turkish citizens will soon be cleaned with electronic passports.
