In Russia, the Internet already accounts for every third ruble when paying for purchases using plastic cards,
Vedomosti reports . This is much more than in America (judging by the turnover of online processing systems).
The volume of payments for goods and services using cards last year grew by more than one and a half times - by 51.1% to 882.7 billion rubles, the Central Bank report says in 2008. The increase is due to the fact that by 45.6 % to 458,300 increased the number of devices that accept cards for payment.
However, Russians continue to use cards not quite for their intended purpose: 88.9% of the amounts going through plastic cards fall on cash withdrawals from ATMs, whereas only 9.7% are used for settlements. This “uncivilization” of citizens explains their imaginary “advancement” when compared with Americans in terms of the share of Internet payments.

A total of 119.2 million cards were issued in Russia, but less than half are actually used.
