In 2008, pirated software in Russia was 7% less

image 68% of software installed on personal computers in Russia in 2008 was unlicensed, according to a report by the International Software Manufacturers Association (BSA). This number is 6.8% lower than in 2007 (73%). At the same time, the financial losses of software developers in Russia from the use of pirated products increased by 2% to $ 4.2 billion.

The report says that Russia for the second year in a row shows the most significant reduction in the level of piracy. Of the 110 countries in only 57 countries, the level of piracy has decreased, in 16 countries it has increased.
Since the global computer market is growing much faster in countries with a high level of piracy, the global level of piracy increased by 3% over the year and amounted to 41% in 2008.

Back in 2006, Russia left the top 20 countries with the highest use of pirated software, when from 2003 to 2006 the level of piracy in Russia also dropped by 7% (from 87% to 80%).

In the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China), the level of computer piracy was 73%, 2% lower than in 2007, with the highest level of piracy (79%) among these countries was recorded in China, the lowest in Brazil (58%). The level of piracy in Ukraine grew by 1% and amounted to 84%, which corresponds to the level of 2006. On average, the EU figure was 35%.

The list of countries with the lowest level of software piracy has not changed :

20% - United States
21% - Japan
21% - Luxembourg
22% - New Zealand

However, despite the decline in the level of piracy in the United States by 1%, the loss of rights holders rose to $ 9 billion.

The highest level of piracy:

95% - Georgia
92% - Armenia
92% - Bangladesh
92% - Zimbabwe
90% - Moldova
90% - Azerbaijan
90% - Sri Lanka

The BSA believes that the level of piracy in Russia has decreased only thanks to programs for legalizing software from the state and copyright holders, as well as bringing Russian intellectual property laws in line with international treaties TRIPS and WIPO.
Probably, the “active life position of the Russian law enforcement agencies” and the introduction of a computer distribution scheme with a pre-installed operating system also had a positive effect.
