According to the
Email Sender and Provider Coalition , email users bombarded with spam
use buttons like “report spam” or “unsubscribe” to help remove unwanted correspondence from the Inbox.
The survey was conducted by research company
Ispos among 2252 people using various mail services (AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and Gmail) and revealed interesting facts. Thus, almost 80% of respondents said they use the “report spam” button when they do not know the sender’s address, while 20% think that this is an easy way to remove the sender from the mailing list.

As a rule, users click on the "report spam" or "unnecessary" buttons based only on the sender's address and the subject of the message, without opening the content of the letter.
Almost all users said that they would use the “Unsubscribe” button if it were present in their email program. They also talk about the need to click "declare fraud."

Some experts believe that due to the thoughtless use of users of such buttons, legitimate senders are suffering, since spammers, unlike them, quickly bypass the filtering system and “blacklists” using proxy servers.
But Charles Stiles, administrator of the
AOL mail system (who was one of the first on the Web to use the “report about spam” button), believes that these buttons are a panacea.
