Last week, Mozilla Labs announced the launch of beta version 1.0 of Prism and updated the site to facilitate this process. Having played a little bit, I will try to reveal the best and worst sides in this latest release.
Prism can be downloaded in two versions - as an application and as a plug-in to Firefox.
Access the Web application from the desktop or OS X dock, that is, from anywhere, in the form of a normal shortcut. The emphasis is on: “Now it’s not necessary to launch a browser. Modern browsers are stable, but still Prism is safer and will not fall with Fox. ”
New, but still damp API, which will give sites made under Prism, more opportunities to interact with the desktop. For example, direct drag-and-drop, cross-references with a Web application, and the like.
Customizable fonts.
The ability to work through a proxy.
Clear personal data
Automatic update (stated, but secretly, while it works clumsily).
Autoload "applications."
When working with RSS and mail - update information in the tray, pop-up alerts.
SSL support (Stable with only Google and Mozilla certificates, Microsoft is not very).
Disadvantages:
In general, the Cyrillic alphabet does not work at the setup stage. The name of the shortcut (second line) has to be typed in English, and then renamed the shortcut to Russian (perhaps this is just my problem).
In the application, at the moment, there is no installer. You think it's portable? No, all settings and links remain in the user's OS folders.
The goodies described above, and even then not all, work only in the Fox plugin. In the application, almost nothing can be configured. More precisely, it is possible, but only by digging "inside." I love to customize everything for myself. I know for certain that the scripts for Grizmanki will soon appear, which will partially solve the problem.
And now a little about the reasons why the raw product, read hard Alpha , suddenly, in a month, became Beta. As you understand, the only active competitor is Google Chrome. Not having time to succeed before the release of the lame man, Prism was abandoned. At least, I do not know any programmer from Mozilla Labs who was engaged in this project closely until May of this year. And then testing of the Lame under OS X begins . Well, of course, all the geeks of the makovodas will try the new Prism. ')
I treat Google and Mozilla equally well, please do not look for bias in this post - this is simply a matter of course ( although I get a bit more money from Google ).
I work in Fox, but for the time being, I will make labels from Lame.
