On the power of external hard

I have already come to terms with the need to pull out the power supply every time after using my external hard drive LaCie 500Gb. But I recently connected it to the MacBook (Aluminum Unibody model) and was very surprised when, by pressing Eject to disconnect the hard drive, Mac OS X Leopard automatically turned off the power of the hard drive, although the power supply was still in the outlet. Is it possible to make such a chip on Windows XP?
