Russia defended the champion title in the “Battle of Intelligences”, which is held with the support of IBM

For the past 12 years, IBM has deliberately created a platform where students try to apply fundamental knowledge to solve everyday problems. This link between high school and real life is very important not only for students but also for companies. Such victories directly affect the volume of foreign investment in the country, because any corporation is interested in attracting the most capable and promising specialists.

This year, a team of students of St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics became the winner of the ACM ICPC final.

ACM ICPC, the student team world programming championship, is the largest international competition for university students from around the world, which educates new generations of talents in science and in information technology.

In the final part of the ACM ICPC competition, also known as The Battle of the Brains, the one hundred best university teams in the world were to use open standards-based technology to develop software that can help solve world problems. level Each team consisting of three participants was offered 11 tasks of different degrees of complexity, modeled on the basis of such real problems as, for example: creating an airport timetable for safe landing of aircraft that would take into account changing weather conditions and other surprises, or optimizing traffic flow in peak hours on the road network.

The winning teams were determined by the number of tasks correctly solved in the final competition and, all other things being equal, by the least time spent on their solution. A team of students at St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics was able to solve 9 of 11 proposed problems, becoming the winner of the ACM ICPC 2009 final. The world programming champions will return home with prizes from IBM, with special scholarships and with the main award - the title young programmers in the world. "

“The victory of the ITMO team at St. Petersburg State University and the excellent results of the rest of the Russian teams in the championship final once again confirmed that our country’s potential in creating and developing information technologies is enormous,” said Kirill Kornilyev , General Director of IBM in Russia and the CIS. - To create innovative IT solutions requires a high level of preparation, a deep understanding of the problem and the ability to offer the best solution. All these qualities are inherent in Russian IT professionals. That is why IBM opened its own laboratory in Moscow back in 2006. ”
