Translator's note: this manual is not an exact translation of the eyeOS User Manual manual, it has been corrected for eyeOS 1.8 versions taking into account changes in this version and is valid for the ru-system Russification package.

1. Introduction

Welcome to the eyeOS user guide . This guide describes how to start using the eyeOS web system and general use of its applications.

eyeOS is a web-based system that allows you to work and have fun with your files and documents wherever there is an Internet connection. With eyeOS, you can organize and centralize your files and documents, play your media files, work with Word documents and much more. All you need to get started is a web browser on your computer, internet tablet, or any internet device.

To start using eyeOS, you need to know the address of the server where eyeOS is installed. If you do not have a private server (for example, an eyeOS server provided by your company or a group of friends), you can use the eyeOS public server, which is available at www.eyeOS.info .

1.1. Login

The first thing you need to do to use eyeOS is to type in the address of your server in the address bar of your browser. You will be taken to the eyeOS login menu (see Illustration 1).

image

Figure 1: The eyeOS login menu

If you already have an account on this server, simply enter your username and password and click "Login" to log into your desktop. Please go to Chapter 2, "Desktop: First Steps."

If you still do not have an eyeOS account on this server, and the server administrator allows you to create new users (the text “New user” appears in the lower left part of the login window), you can create a new user. Please go to chapter 1.2 "Creating a new user".

1.2. Creating a new user

To create a new user, click New User and enter your username and password on the form. Please note that the username must be at least 4 characters in length and that you must enter your password twice to be sure of the correct input.

Once you have entered your username and password, click Create Account (see Illustration 2).

image

Figure 2: Creating a new user

If everything was in order (and a message appeared indicating that your user was successfully created), you can now log in using the login window by entering the username and password that you just selected to create your user.

2. Desktop: first steps

Only after pressing the “Login” button, the login window will disappear and your eyeOS desktop will appear. You will be in your eyeOS desktop (see Illustration 3).

image

Figure 3: Default eyeOS desktop view

Now you are in your eyeOS desktop, which is divided into four zones: an application bar, desktop icons, a system bar, and a taskbar.

2.1. Application bar

At the top of the desktop, you will see an application panel (also known as eyeDock), where you will find the main applications organized in categories.

To see the applications in the category, just click on the category image. To launch an application, click on its icon or description (see Illustration 4).

Note that the panel categories and icons can be edited in the eyeManageApps application (you can launch it from the system panel by selecting “Run” or opening the program folder and clicking on the “Application Manager” button). Do not be afraid to customize your eyeDock.

image

Figure 4: Opening the Office category in eyeDock

2.2. Default desktop icons

In the left desktop area you have desktop icons (home folder, applications, calendar, contacts and recycle bin). To open an icon, simply click on it.

2.2.1. Home Folder Icon

The home folder will open the eyeOS file manager (also known as eyeFiles) with the contents of your home folder, which contains your personal files and documents (see Illustration 5).

From eyeFiles you can upload files from your computer to eyeOS, files from eyeOS to your computer, and manage them (copy / paste and rename them, create folders).

You can also run some files that are recognized by eyeOS. They include images, videos, text documents, archived files, eyePackages (eyeOS installation packages), and so on.

Please refer to chapter 3.1 „eyeFiles: file manager” for more information about eyeFiles and its use.

image

Figure 5: Home folder

2.2.2. Application Icon

The Application icon will open the application folder where you can launch each installed application. Note that the system could install applications that will not appear in eyeDock, but they will be in the applications folder, because eyeDock only shows your preferred applications (to edit eyeDock, click Top Panel Settings in the upper left of the application folder).

image

Figure 6: Application Folder

2.2.3. Trash icon

The Recycle Bin icon will open your trash bin, where deleted files will go before complete removal from the system (see Illustration 7). You should periodically check the trash bin, since the files in the trash are also part of your file system and you may find that your disk quota has been exhausted due to the files in the trash.

2.3. System panel

Right above the taskbar, you will see a system tray that can be opened by clicking on the green eyeOS button in the central lower area of your desktop.

From the system panel you can perform some general operations (see Illustration 8):

â—Ź End Session: This item will close your current session and return you to the login window. Please note that all unsaved documents will be lost.

â—Ź Execute: use this item to launch the application by entering its name. You can also use this item to use system utilities (for example, type killall in eyeLaunch

â—Ź About eyeOS: in the eyeInfo window you will see the eyeOS version, which

is used, and the names of the eyeOS team members, as well as some collaborators.

● Applications: this item will open the application folder in the same way as the “Applications” icon on the desktop (see Illustration 6).

â—Ź System Setup: Click to start system setup. If you are logged in as a regular user, you can change some of the options and presets of your user and desktop (see Illustration 9). If you are logged in as root, you will also see some options for managing your eyeOS server.

image

Figure 11: Uploading some files to the home folder

Once the download is complete, a message confirming the download will appear. When you close the download window, you will see the new files just downloaded to your folder.

Note that if the server configuration allows it, you will see thumbnails of the images instead of the image icon. The next time you update eyeSoft, you will also see the applications from that repository.

3.9.2.5. Installing new software

To install new software in your eyeOS, you can do this from the eyeSoft application repository, or by downloading the prepared eyeOS package (usually called eyepackages) into your home folder and clicking on it under the superuser.

To install new software through eyeSoft, simply open it by clicking on the “Applications” icon on the desktop and click on “Install Applications”. The eyeSoft package manager opens.

The first thing you need to do every time you open eyeSoft is to click on the “Update” button, so it can update the sources of the programs and show you the latest available packages and applications for installation (see Illustration 22).

image

Illustration 22: Updating eyeSoft

To install an application, simply click on it in the list of applications and click the “Install” button. The installation process will begin, displaying brief information about the application, and asking you to agree to the license terms by clicking on the “Accept” button.

Then the application will be downloaded and installed on your system. Wait for the message “Package successfully installed” and then close the window.

You can now launch your new application from the “Applications” folder. Note that every application you install will be available to all users on your system.

To remove an application, simply select it (note that the installed message will appear next to the application in the list), and click on the “Delete” button. The application will be uninstalled from your system.

Finally, to search through the list of applications, just enter the word you want to find and click the “Search” button. The list will be updated to match your search. To clear the search result and show all applications again, simply delete the search words and click on the “Search” button again.
