OpenOffice.org is one of the largest open-source projects whose goal is to create a free and yet full-fledged office suite that is not inferior in capabilities of Microsoft Office. At the moment, there are 6 main applications in the package:
- Writer . Word processor and visual HTML editor. Analogue of MS Word.
- Calc . Spreadsheet, analog MS Excel.
- Draw . Vector graphics editor. It has a number of features similar to CorelDRAW.
- Impress . Presentation program. Analogue MS Powerpoint.
- Base . The mechanism of connecting to external DBMS and built-in DBMS HSQLDB. Analog MS Access.
- Math Math formula editor like MS Equation Editor.
For users accustomed to MS Office, OpenOffice.org may not seem too fast, a bit unusual in terms of the interface and the implementation of certain functions. All this is more than offset by the absolute free package and the presence of almost all the functions necessary for everyday work.
Literally today, the English version of OpenOffice.org 2.2.0 for Windows has become available for download:
OOo_2.2.0_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe ,
mirror number 1 ,
mirror number 2 (108.6Mb).
OpenOffice.org is a multi-platform project. Versions under Linux, MacOS and other operating systems and languages can be downloaded from the special site
download.openoffice.org. The appearance of the Russian version of OpenOffice.org 2.2.0 will be announced in HabraWare separately.

Practice shows that often the work does not even need to use multifunctional office suites. Sometimes a good text editor like
AbiWord is enough. It will not replace all MS Office or even MS Word, but if you only need to open, edit and format not the most complex text documents in your work, AbiWord can be a real free alternative.
For those who look to the future, I will not forget to mention online services that are predicted to become the killers of traditional office suites. One of the contenders for the crown is
Google Docs & Spreadsheets , a prototype of an office suite running from a browser that only recently came out of
Google Labs , but has already earned a lot of flattering estimates and predictions.
