The Googlers decided to celebrate their first birthday in Russia by moving to a spacious and pleasant room, at the same time telling everyone about what they have achieved in the past period.
The event was held in the format of a press lunch, which differs from the press conference by the presence of tables with sandwiches, fruits and drinks. This format clearly sets up journalists in a more pleasant way.
Sergey Burkov, the head of the Moscow development center, speaking after Vladimir Dolgov, spoke mostly about how employees live in the company. Unfortunately, it was difficult to find out something new from his speech in this regard: Google described life more than once in many foreign media outlets, publications on this topic appeared on Habré. It is worth noting that the company is trying to create the same conditions for employees of the Russian representative office as in the West. Although, of course, the scale is not the same: for example, a whole team of massage therapists works in Googleplex, and a massage chair works in the Google Russia office. Not yet in it, and such "wonders", as the replacement of oil in cars, but free food and rest rooms are provided.

A new project most often starts with a small group of developers - about 3-5 people. The leader of the group is engaged not only in leadership: he programs on a par with the others. Decisions in the group are made on the basis of the concession. A Google employee can devote 20% of his time to his own innovative projects: in fact, he can work on one new service a day a week without asking his supervisor for permission. All these projects are still slightly controlled: they are entered into the database in order to check the “correctness of the use of 20%”.
Ideally, from the inception of the new project to its withdrawal to the beta stage 3 months pass. As development progresses, more and more developers are connecting to it. It should be noted that we are talking about 3 months before being withdrawn to the “beta”: the company does not have a clear timetable for when exactly the final release should take place. On April 1 of a certain year, a humorous article was even published on Google, trying to explain with examples that if the project leaves the beta stage, it will die quickly - and that is why many of the company's services have not yet reached the final version.
Speaking about hiring a company, Sergey Burkov said that they are ready to accept any number of new employees: “500 candidates will arrive - we will accept 500. The main thing is to have an interview.” The interview may consist of many stages and necessarily includes a test of knowledge of English. This knowledge is necessary, at a minimum, because all new employees are sent to the US for an internship. Sergey declined to name the number of employees of the Russian representative office, citing confidentiality of information.
After being appointed director of the development center, Sergey Burkov visited California and remarked: “There are no idiots in Google!” Among the colleagues I met, he said, there were extremely smart people who apparently didn’t agree with his experience in other places.
