ICANN is preparing to change the rules for the activities of registrars and conduct a global sweep among them. 860 registrars have already divorced, among them there are many unscrupulous dealers who even deceive their customers - for example, intercept their domain names after the expiration date or prevent a client from switching to another competitor-competitor. Now ICANN is conducting an exemplary “spanking” of such a registrar RegisterFly.com.
According to ICANN, the existing rules for regulating the activities of registrars were written in those days when there were few registrars. For example, in 1997 there was only the company Network Solutions, which sold domains for $ 50 per year. Now the competition has intensified: the number of registrars is approaching a thousand, and the cost of the domain has dropped to $ 6, and therefore the rules need to be changed.
There are no specific plans, and now ICANN is considering several options: for example, to introduce some kind of certification of registrars or to introduce mandatory approval in ICANN to change the owner of any domain, or to create a special procedure to quickly and completely cancel accreditation of a specific company that has proved its incompetence. All of these issues will be discussed this week at the ICANN meeting in Lisbon.
Currently ICANN is dealing with the scandalous registrar RegisterFly.com, whose misdemeanors are described in detail on the dedicated site. Of the hundred thousand clients of this registrar, several hundred or even thousands lost their domains due to the fault of the company that could not extend them (the company ran out of money, and with the last money the director of the company made a liposuction for himself). After several months of litigation, ICANN decided to cancel the accreditation of RegisterFly.com starting next Saturday, March 31, 2007.
