Fifteen years ago, two scientists from the company's research laboratory, now known as Telenor, were eagerly preparing for a new project. They were going to create their own web browser. The first lines of code subsequently turned into Opera, a browser that set and continues to set standards for functionality and speed for the entire browser market.
Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive officer of Opera Software, and Geir Ivarsøy began creating the original desktop web browser in April 1994. Today, Opera browsers on Windows, Mac and Linux computers use about 40 million people.

"Geir and I knew that the web would change the way of life, work, entertainment, and the web browser should be a tool for this change," said Jon von Techner. “Today I am proud of the achievements of the company and the Opera community. In the next 15 years, billions of people will become users of the World Wide Web and I am sure that we will be able to give them more reasons to use Opera - after all, everyone wants to work with a good browser no matter where and how the Internet is used. ”
The Opera browser for desktop computers has become the first step to creating a single cross-platform kernel. It is capable of working on many hardware, and today Opera offers Internet access through a wide range of devices. Televisions, set-top boxes, media players, mobile phones, game consoles, cars and, of course, computers - all of these devices make Opera browsers available to hundreds of millions of users around the world.
15 years of browser innovation
User needs are the main and constant reference point of all Opera innovations since the creation of the first browser. Opera Desktop has offered new features to make the Internet more productive and useful.
The first release of Opera contained the basis for using tabs that allow you to load and view several web pages at the same time in a single browser window.
In 2001, the company Opera proposed the mouse control function - Mouse Gestures, which radically improved the navigation on the World Wide Web. The Speed Dial system, which allows you to quickly open websites from the main browser panel, and Opera Link synchronization mechanism significantly simplified the work with bookmarks, regardless of which device is used to access the Network. All this gave impetus to the development of new browser functionality.
This year, the company Opera introduced Opera Turbo technology, which allows you to compress the contents of web pages and quickly download them, even at low Internet connection speeds. And this is not all - many of the company's developments have yet to win the recognition of users. Stay with us and see what the next generation Internet will be like!
