Russia again became the world champion in programming
For the second year in a row the team of St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics became the winner of the student programming world championship.
One hundred of the best university teams in the world, selected from 7,109 teams from 1838 universities, gathered at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (Royal Institute of Technology, KTH). Their task was to develop software that can help solve world-class problems. Each team consisting of three participants was offered 11 tasks. For example, creating an airport timetable for safe landing of aircraft, which would take into account changes in weather conditions, or optimization of traffic flow during peak hours. The technology selected by participants should be based on open standards.

The winning teams were determined, firstly, by the number of correctly solved tasks, and all other things being equal - by the shortest time spent searching for a solution. A team of students from St. Petersburg solved 9 of 11 problems. At the ACM ICPC Championship, four gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded. The second, third and fourth places respectively were taken by the teams of Tsinghua University from China, St. Petersburg State University and Saratov State University.
On April 21, 2009 in Stockholm, right in the same hall where the winners were awarded the Nobel Prize, the winners of the finals of the next International Team Programming Contest for the World Programming International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) 2009 were awarded. This time Russian teams took the first, third and fourth places.
In just the past 10 years, Russia has won the championship title six times in these competitions.
The next world final of the ICPC 2010 championship will be held in Harbin, China. The teams will be hosted by Harbin Engineering University (Harbin Engineering University).
