Citizendium will fix Wikipedia errors

The Citizendium project (Citizens' Compendium, English “civilian reference book”), which is to become another competitor of Wikipedia, on March 25 left the closed testing stage and began to work in full force, albeit with the beta label on the logo today. A new online encyclopedia created by one of the founders of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger (Larry Senger), who, starting to seek recognition of his old achievements , decided to try to create something qualitatively new and better than his past child.

Numerous inaccuracies, intentional vandalism, as well as the unreasonableness and vagueness of the facts in many Wikipedia articles from the very beginning worried the community of authors of the resource and its users around the world. Constantly taken measures to get rid of these vices gradually improve the quality of the information provided by the encyclopedia. But while maintaining the ideology behind the freedom to edit any text, anyone, these flaws are inevitable, says Sanger.

His proposed alternative path is based on improving control over the contribution of volunteers in several ways. First of all, registration is required to participate in Citizendium. This should increase the personal responsibility of the authors for the information they publish.

But the system is not limited only to the hope of human honesty. The main innovation is the peer review system, built on the work of the so-called Constables (CZ Constebles). Anyone can enter their number if he is at least 25 years old and has a degree not lower than a bachelor’s degree. These people will check the information published by users, make comments to them and, in the case of malicious disobedience, apply sanctions up to the weaning of the site’s life.

The wiki content has been taken as a basis, which will be rechecked, supplemented and brought into a more academic form. In the near future , 820 authors and 180 editors have 1,100 articles from the old Wikipedia. Of course, in the future the number of participants should grow. At least, Sanger hopes so.

Back in September, when the first mentions of Citizendium appeared, many commentators had deep doubts that the expert model could justify the expectations placed on it. Not to mention the clearly unpopular restrictive measures that it carries, its very effectiveness in screening out false and erroneous information is put into question. However, very soon we will see everything with my own eyes. Fortunately, there will be no shortage of those who want to arrange an examination for an ambitious project in the near future.
