Microsoft licenses its technology

Microsoft makes basic communications protocols available for licensing to other companies, including competitors, enabling them to incorporate Microsoft technology into their products. Some are available now.

The list of available protocols, XML schemas, and APIs includes transport protocols for communication between Office Outlook 2007 and Exchange Server 2007.

“With the license, other companies will be able to implement the Outlook-Exchange Transport Protocol specification in their own products,” the company said.

The Outlook-Exchange Transport Protocol supports personal information management features such as email, calendar, contacts, and tasks in Office Outlook 2007. The protocol is currently licensed, although Microsoft will continue to work on the specification until June.

Protocols, web service descriptions, client configuration options and other technologies for Office Collaboration Server are also available for licensing.
