Washington is the first city with free mobile TV.

Washington will be the first city where free digital TV for mobile devices will be launched. It can be freely received and viewed on smartphones, car displays and laptops. The DTV signal will begin broadcasting in August from five local television stations owned by CBS, NBC, PBS, Ion and Fox. This is only the first step in the implementation of the plans of the newly formed coalition Open Mobile Video , which aims to organize the ubiquitous broadcasting of free mobile TV. By the end of the year, they plan to pile up another 25 American cities, including New York, Chicago and San Francisco, and cover the area where 39% of the US population lives with a broadcasting zone.

It is not yet clear what specific devices will be able to receive digital television and in what standard will the broadcasting be carried out. Cellular operators do not show much enthusiasm, because they have their own television for their subscribers, and paid by subscription.

However, Dell has already presented at the recent NAB exhibition a new laptop model with a built-in DTV receiver. Mobile phones with such functionality have already been announced by LG and Samsung. Kenwood manufactures appropriate receivers for car interiors.
