Flash came on TV

Adobe intends to seriously expand the scope of its already popular Flash technology. Having occupied almost 99% of all personal computers and having begun the conquest of smartphones, the flash is now approaching home appliances. At the NAB Show conference taking place these days, Adobe introduced the Flash platform optimized for TVs, digital set-top boxes and Blu-ray players.

The newly formed alliance, along with Adobe, includes hardware and chip manufacturers, including Broadcom, Intel, NXP Semiconductors, Sigma Designs, and STMicroelectronics. Other partners are Comcast, Disney Interactive, Netflix, The New York Times and Atlantic Records.

Adobe's open framework allows all existing flash applications to run on TVs. This approach offers great advantages compared to the Yahoo Widget platform for TV presented a year ago, as well as the Microsoft Silverlight platform, which is also moving in this direction.

The first flash-enabled TVs should be on sale this year.
