Geo-targeting in Yandex and Google

The two largest players in the search market in Russia almost simultaneously introduced geo-targeting.

Google approached the issue very carefully, which made it possible not to alienate users:

1) He introduced tips specific to a specific region.

2) And without changing the global issue, organically added the so-called “10 box” results. It should be noted that these results for implicit queries are not the “best answer”, i.e. do not stand above the organic issue, and are somewhere between 3-5 positions. For example, the query: parks :

Yandex entered the question pretty boldly - introduced a new algorithm, which, depending on the IP address or user settings, gives a different issue for a particular region. There were only a few issues, speaking of Russia it is Moscow, St. Petersburg and all other regions united in one issue (which is a bit strange, considering the length of our country).

The result was negative and caused a huge amount of complaints. For many requests, especially in non-Moscow issuance - horror (many irrelevant sites).

It has just been a week since the algorithm has been entered, and how, after any innovation, we have not yet had time to tweak everything, but there are a few things surprising:

- Issue is different, even informational, absolutely not targeted requests. For example, at the request of Pushkin's Biography, people from different cities will receive different answers.

- The number of "working" regions makes you wonder about the significance of such innovations.

- It seems that the initial dates were broken and laid out as it is only to be faster.

- Did not use the previous experience of buki.yandex.ru (or was it negative ?!)

- Yandex, like Google, offers hints to the “charmer” (shows pictures, or offers to see addresses), but many requests are classified incorrectly, for example, if you type " landscape design ", you will be offered to look at the pictures, and upon request " landscape designs ", choose a company. Google is doing well.

To conclude, we can say that Yandex’s actions caused a storm of negative emotions among people involved in search engine optimization, while Google’s innovations went almost unnoticed, but user interaction was extremely improved, which is one of the main tasks of any search engine.
