New Israeli program connects computers without wires

In Israel, developed a program that allows computers to communicate with each other directly, without cables and without Internet servers.

Using the WiPeer program, created by Professor Technion Roy Friedman and a group of his graduate students, computers that are up to 30 m (indoors) or 100 m (in open space) from each other can exchange text messages, any files and games without help. Internet connections and USB cables.

Direct communication between computers equipped with wireless devices has been technically possible for several years. The only problem was the need for a complex configuration process. Three graduate students of Professor Friedman in January 2006 chose this problem as the theme of their doctoral theses - and the result was the easy-to-use WiPeer program to use there.

According to the developers, WiPeer is especially useful for people who often travel on business trips. Using it, you can, for example, work together or play chess on an airplane - even if employees are sitting at different ends of the cabin, and there is no Internet on the airplane.

Two weeks ago, the program was placed on an open website on www.wipeer.com . From this point on, it was downloaded by several thousand people - and perhaps even more, since the program can be rewritten from each other, and not just downloaded from the official site. Professor Friedman says that user feedback on the program is very positive, although there are some flaws in it that are eliminated during the run-in process.
