The new version of XMIND is now available in open source!

Once, together with one of the CHIP magazine issues, I received an annual license of the wonderful XMind 2008 program, thus becoming the proud owner of, in my opinion, the best medium for creating / editing mind maps and brainstorming .

Today I received a letter on my soap, which dealt with the new version of this wonderful program. It turned out that the company carried out a complete rebranding, and besides, it had already released versions of its utility for Linux, Mac and Windows, providing it in several variations: Open Source, Eclipse plugin, Pro and even Portable!

Unlike the previous version, the new XMind offers, as mentioned above, a variety of distribution options, thereby covering the most popular platforms. For people actively leading the development of some idea, project or concept, a portable version can be useful, which, according to the developers, will work from a USB flash drive on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux 32/64 bit.

Also, developers have focused on Web 2.0 component of their product and now the maps can be uploaded to the XMind website (in the Pro version, even private sharing is offered).

Here is a list of features from the official site:

  • Creation of mind maps (in different sources called the original mindmap or mental maps)
  • Creating fish skeleton cards (they are also a diagram of causes and effects)
  • Creating spreadsheets - placing data in the form of a table
  • Assigning mental maps to nodes, arbitrary graphic markers (icons) from a standard or own set
  • Creating notes to maps and nodes with the ability to format RichText
  • Insert hyperlinks in map elements
  • Representation of any node of the map as a central theme of the diagram, folding and unfolding of map elements
  • Spellchecking
  • Generate a mental map legend and filter elements
  • The ability to import maps of the format of other popular packages Freemind and MindManager
  • Export to Html / PNG / GIF / JPEG / BMP
  • Uploading to share.xmind.net and sharing it anywhere

As you can see, the list is very, very decent, as for a product that has become free. And for people with larger and possibly professional needs in the paid version, many more pleasant baubles are offered, such as: exporting to PDF / doc / Powerpoint / MindManager formats, searching for topics and images from the network, creating snapshots of all or part of the map, private sharing, comparison maps, special items for task lists, a large number of icons / markers / graphics of high quality, the ability to save the created styles and themes.

In general, both in free and in professional versions, the program justifies and sometimes exceeds all user expectations, which can be people of completely different professions and “castes” :) from the head of an enterprise, a business analyst or a project manager, to a housewife. products or menu holiday table.
